‘Cans’
The audience share the head of the performer in binaural work, and this piece specifically plays on this, exploring the intimate amplification and filtering of small sounds which occurs when a cup or a hand is placed over the ear. It is a light-hearted reference to the children’s game of cup-and-string telephones, with a selection of modified cans and cups placed over the ears of the performer. The additional elements of the cans are intentionally visual (including a punched-paper music box), and the performer is seated close to the audience to increase the sense of intimacy and exploration.
